Why the Certified Peer Recovery Specialist [CPRS] Role is Different, Unique and, Slightly Better (?)

thevictoryprs

So, in my opinion, the PRS/CPRS role is slightly better than that of psychiatrist or counselor...the value of the Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) cannot be overstated. The very first benefit that comes to mind about working with a PRS/CPRS is the lived experience that they bring…lived experience is receipts – PROOF that they’ve been there done that. Specifically, lived experience is defined as: personal knowledge about the world gained through direct, first-hand involvement in everyday events.

The PRS/CPRS is someone in recovery from the very illness they support. 😊

Further, unlike a therapist, sponsor, coach (or parole office), the PRS/CPRS provides: non-clinical, person-centered, strengths-based, wellness-focused and trauma-informed support to those we serve.

· Non-clinical (not involved with diagnosis, administering medication or treatment)

· Person-centered (self-determination; needs & preferences of person served)

· Strengths-based (“what’s strong, not wrong”)

· Wellness-focused (recognizing wellness as more than the absence of illness)

· Trauma-informed (recognizing trauma as a pre-cursor to MH/SUD)

You can also expect the relationship between a PRS/CPRS and peer to be recovery-oriented and non-coercive. Again, as it relates to the lived-experience just imagine that something good and wholesome and beneficial to humanity can be purposed from all the hell we went through!!! And that is what is most special: "A person who can overcome addiction can overcome anything!" .
